Alcohol Abuse and Treatment
Alcohol and nicotine abuse are two of the major causes of death in this country. Both are available at your local retailer. It is true that you are at greater risk for alcoholism if it runs in your family; however, this is not always the case, nor does every member of the family necessarily end up in a detoxification unit.
Many alcoholics begin drinking abusively as early as the age of ten or twelve. By their mid to late twenties, they have liver damage. Their lives spin out of control. They engage in risk taking activities, commit crimes and acts of violence, have damaged relationships, mental health issues and undetected health problems.
KCCC generally works with mid to late stage alcoholics who have become entangled in the criminal justice system. Entering a treatment program is a condition of their freedom. Even at the risk of more jail time, some alcoholics begin drinking again. Clients frequently go through treatment multiple times before they are really ready to give up the lifestyle and enjoy the freedom of a life-long recovery.
